Because it requires breaking the skin barrier, tattooing may carry health risks, including infection or allergic reaction. In the USA for example, the Red Cross prohibits a person who has received a tattoo from donating blood for 12 months (FDA 2000), unless the procedure was done in a state regulated and licensed studio, using sterile techniques.
Since tattoo instruments come into contact with blood and bodily fluids, diseases may be transmittedif the instruments are used on more than one person without being sterilised.
However, infections from clean and modern tattoo studios are rare as these studios use only single- use needles on their clients.
No one in the United States has ever contracted HIV from having a tattoo!!
Some tattoo artists recommend keeping your new tattoo wrapped up for the first 24 hours whilst others suggest removing the bandages after 2 hours or less, also they often suggest avoiding using hot tubs or swimming pools for the first two weeks, this is to ensure the ink does not fade due to over hydration and it also helps to avoid bacteria and chlorine. It's best to follow the instrctions of your tattooist regarding these matters.
